Glutathione (Reduced, GSH)

CAS #: 70-18-8

Glutathione (Reduced, GSH) is the most abundant intracellular non-protein thiol and a vital endogenous antioxidant. It protects cells from reactive oxygen species, serves as an essential cofactor for detoxification enzymes, supports liver health, and influences melanin synthesis for skin health. Essential for detoxification, cellular defense, and overall wellness. Available as lyophilized powder with ≥99% purity.

Product Overview

Glutathione in its reduced form (GSH) reaches millimolar concentrations within cells, making it the most abundant intracellular non-protein thiol. It is naturally present in the liver and central nervous system. GSH protects cells against free radicals and pro-oxidants, prevents damage from reactive oxygen species, peroxides, lipid peroxides, and heavy metals. It serves as a cofactor for critical detoxification enzymes including glutathione peroxidases, glutathione S-transferases, and glyoxalases.

Mechanism of Action

GSH works through conjugation reactions to convert lipophilic toxins into water-soluble forms for excretion. It regenerates vitamins C and E after oxidation, regulates redox signaling via S-glutathionylation of protein cysteine residues, and supports protein folding, cell cycle regulation, and ascorbate metabolism. GSSG (oxidized form) is recycled back to GSH by glutathione reductase with NADPH as cofactor.

Key Benefits

Toxin Elimination — Directly binds toxins including heavy metals, pollutants, and metabolic byproducts. Facilitates phase II liver detoxification through glutathione S-transferase enzymes, converting harmful compounds into water-soluble forms for excretion via bile or urine.

Liver Health Support — Mitigates oxidative stress within hepatocytes and supports mitochondrial function. Liver disease has been consistently linked to reduced glutathione concentrations, establishing the critical relationship between GSH levels and hepatic health.

Cellular Protection — Directly reduces hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides. Regenerates vitamins C and E to maintain a sustained antioxidant defense system. Safeguards mitochondrial function, DNA integrity, protein structure, and membrane stability.

Skin Health & Beautification — As the most abundant endogenous antioxidant in skin tissue, GSH protects against UV-induced oxidative damage and modulates melanin biosynthesis. Its sulfur-containing composition influences melanogenesis toward lighter pigment production, supporting even skin tone.
